Why I loved working in Hospitality

I am grateful for all the opportunities and friendships I gained from it in the last decade. My life changed in this amazing time in a way I couldn’t imagine. If someone would tell me ten years ago how my life would be today, I wouldn’t believe this person at all. My Boss called me once a “natural”, this kind of person who is meant to work in the industry. I gained massive confidence in my profession and learned a variety of skills. All the insecurity I still had back then, is gone. Working in hospitality teaches you how to deal with unforeseen situations quickly. It makes you humble.

What makes hospitality so special?

It’s one of these jobs where you can still make money and career according to your skills and the passion you put into work. The career opportunities are endless! You can work anywhere in the world, even without understanding the language. You meet every day new people; your work never becomes repetitive and boring.

…and you get a lot of “special” guests…

Let me tell you a little anecdote.

A couple of days ago I was working in a Hotel as a Room Service Assistant. We got this call:

Room Service: “Hello, how can I help?”

Guest: “Oh hi, I hope you can help. Listen, I wanted to heat my food but it’s not working!”

RS: “I see, we can do this for you if you like.”

G: “No it's fine, I just don’t know how to open it!”

RS: “What do you like to open?”

G: “The microwave!”

RS: “I am afraid Miss, but we don’t have microwaves in our rooms!”

G: “Yes you do, that’s where is my food now. It’s a white box in the wardrobe.”

RS: “I am afraid, that’s the Safe!”

G: [Switched off]

Why you should work in Hospitality

Simply, you shouldn’t limit yourself. Build up skills in a range of different areas. Try a bit of front-of-house, a bit of back-of-house, and constantly seek to upskill yourself and learn from the people around you.

I am able nowWaiter Joke to make conversation with almost every person from whichever country, about any topic. Hospitality is all about people; whether you’re a spa scheduling coordinator, bellman, summer camp counselor, bartender or working in any other position within the industry. At its core, the job’s main purpose is to make people happy. Solving problems, soothing tensions, lifting moods and facilitating experiences are all challenges to put a smile on someone’s face. Rewarding challenges.
