A new player joined the party (aka YouTube Launch)

After months of debating and considering.

Looking for every possible excuse.

The day finally arrived and my biggest project (yet) went online.

I finally published my first Video. With no further ado, everybody stand up. The unbelievable Scott Walker:

If you watched until the end, you will probably think: What on earth did I just see? Well, let me explain.

I was always a big Quentin Tarantino Fan (Who isn’t?). I could have had the chance to meet him once when he was shooting Inglorious Bastards next to my hometown. But that’s a different story.

As a Teenager, the Kickstarter for my movie obsession was Pulp Fiction. And all his movie openings had a big impact on how I see movies now. I always wanted to create something similar. Back in the days, we did some short movies for fun, maybe I gonna release them one day…

Plus, this great score from Scott Walker. It’s one of these music pieces you will never forget.

“To bring anything into your life, imagine that it is already there.” Richard BrachMain

That’s a powerful sentence. I started this project in my mind as I did already 100 videos. All worked out until I was sitting in front of the camera and the red light went on. My respect for people who can talk freely without stumbling and losing their thoughts after 2 minutes. Being able to speak at that speed for 14 minutes without distracting thinking pauses (“ahh”, “eh”) is exceptional.

But have a look now at my introduction:

Let’s say, short but short enough.

I’ve always wanted to tell stories, make movies and help other people. I just never found the courage to go for it. Far too long I was listening to other people’s opinions about what I am good at and where is my place in life. I am done with that. It’s time to go all-in and this Video is a big part of it. I am so curious, where it goes. Like I mentioned in the video, this experiment is for my son and maybe the generation after. Just imagine you could watch some videos of your grandparents when they were young. Some people would kill for it.

Here comes the interesting part:

After shooting and editing this introduction I felt depressed. Like I lost all my interest in making more content. I felt these videos are really bad and not worthy to share. I was starting to doubt everything I did before. It was like all the air came out of the balloon and there wasn’t any motivation left to stop the air. That’s something you never hear from other Youtubers/Creators. It’s more like: “You can just film with your phone, you don’t need a good idea…” Well, I had a 4k camera, 50 scripts, months of preparation and I still felt like giving up after one video. This explains a lot about why many people quit or never start. It’s a very exposing and intimidating process.

To get a clear head, I went for the long run, spend the next day with my family and slowly the negative thoughts faded away….

What’s next (maybe I should have mentioned in the video):

  • There will be some experiments until I find my voice and style
  • 1-2 Videos a week
  • Interviews /Book reviews / VLOG
  • Will try to transcribe the videos and post them here in the blog
  • I am playing with the idea to provide educational videos as a sound file

Conclusion

Don’t beat yourself up. You can feel bad about your mistakes, but it doesn’t get you anywhere. It’s not a productive way of fixing things. So, you got to give yourself permission to stumble now and then and you will realize anything is fixable. Even your own voice is getting less annoying after you hear it for days….

I hope you enjoyed the videos. Please consider subscribing, ring the bell, share it with your friends…I mean you know the drill.

Very grateful,

Dan Draper

P.S.

After a week learning Adobe Premiere Pro I still just scratch on the surface. The question I asked myself was: How on earth do they program this? There must be a million functions! That’s a mad program.

Plus, I can’t enjoy a YouTube video or a movie anymore because I am looking now constantly how it was edited. (#firstworldproblems)
