Quarantine Distraction Links 07.04.2020

Sitting at home, like the Dessertrest of the planet? Need some entertainment to lift your mood up? Here we go:

Before we start: This Link collection will now be published every 2-3 month, according to Feedback and the Content I will dig up for you. I felt in times like this, its important to get some distractions …

Articles worth reading

The Tail End (Link)

I’ve been thinking about my parents, who are in their mid-60s. During my first 18 years, I spent some time with my parents during at least 90% of my days. But since heading off to college and then later moving out of Boston, I’ve probably seen them an average of only five times a year each, for an average of maybe two days each time. 10 days a year. About 3% of the days I spent with them each year of my childhood.

Being in their mid-60s, let’s continue to be super optimistic and say I’m one of the incredibly lucky people to have both parents alive into my 60s. That would give us about 30 more years of coexistence. If the ten days a year thing holds, that’s 300 days left to hang with mom and dad. Less time than I spent with them in any one of my 18 childhood years.

Seeking the Productive Life: Some Details of My Personal Infrastructure (Link)

To explain my personal infrastructure, I first have to say a bit about my daily life. Something that often surprises people is that for 28 years I’ve been a remote CEO. I’m about as hands-on a CEO as they come. But I’m only physically “in the office” a few times a year. Mostly I’m just at home, interacting with the company with great intensity—but purely through modern virtual…

Night rider: 21 years sleeping on a London bus (Link)

Sunny doesn't resent the others; he has learned to enjoy their boisterousness. When they smile, he smiles. When they laugh, he laughs too. It's amazing how a few pints can evaporate class boundaries, stripping reserved Englishmen of their inhibitions so they chat with the homeless as temporary equals.

What I am reading

Daytripper TP by Fábio Moon (Amazon Link)

Awesome graphic novel. Superbly written and expertly drawn and coloured. I have gone back to this many times for the emotions it invokes and the artistic and creative inspiration. If I had to recommend one book to my son which explains love, relationships, death, and the universe as a Dream I would always go for this milestone. My all-time favorite.

WTF with Marc Maron Episode 1086: Guests Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio (Link)

During a victory lap for their movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio put movie stardom on hold for an hour to have a chat with Marc. They talk about their early days as show business outsiders, the moment they knew their lives would never be the same, the times they've known a movie they're in is going to tank, why they don't want to direct and why they love to produce.

Make an 8Tracks or Spotify playlist for your favorite human. Extra credit: give your playlist a special “reason” or “theme,” like, “Listen to this while you’re getting ready for your first date with Zach!” or, “Pump-yourself-up music to play before you deliver your TEDx Talk.
